December News
Important Dates:
- Thursday, December 18- First grade gingerbread house building day. Mark your calendar to join us at 2:00.
- Friday, December 19- First grade pajama and movie day.
- Monday, December 22 through Sunday, January 4- Winter Break- no school
Learning:
- Phonics (sounds that letters make): adding the suffix s to make plural and verbs showing present tense. Beginning of glued sounds: ang, ing, ong, ung.
- Reading Comprehension (understanding what we read or what is read to us): We will continue to read more nonfiction this month and talk about the features of these books: table of contents, heading, bold words, illustrations, etc. We will also do some comparing and contrasting of books and characters.
- Sight Words (words that cannot be sounded out and need to be memorized): were, are, who, what, when, where, there, here.
- Writing: Learning to write "how to"
- Handwriting: lower-case letters. Please encourage your child to alway use lowercase letters until the start of a sentence or a proper noun.
- Math: increasing addition fluency and nonstandard measurement
- Science/Social/Health: citizenship, how are sounds made in cartoons, sleep keeps us healthy.
Wishlist Items:
- cash donations or Walgreen gift cards to put towards photo development for memory books that each child will get at the end of the year.
- plain white paper plates- small
- craft sticks- any size or color
Homework (in addition to what is listed below your child is expected to get their passport (notebook) signed each night):
- Monday- reading folder with something for child to read/practice
- Tuesday- reading folder with something for child to read/practice
- Wednesday- math folder (will also include a Second Step worksheet most weeks) all these worksheets will be due the following Wednesday, but you can return the folder with the completed worksheets inside whenever they are all completed.
- Thursday-reading folder with something for child to read/practice
- Friday- reading folder with a book for a parent/adult to read to child
